Who we are
Able Child Africa is a UK registered charity that works to secure equal rights for children and young people with disabilities in Africa. We are the leading UK charity working solely to improve the lives of children with disabilities in Africa, working with some of the most vulnerable children in the world.
Working alongside local partners in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, we deliver high-quality programmes that protect, educate and empower children with disabilities, breaking down barriers to inclusion so they can fulfil their potential. We fight for the rights of children with disabilities, creating change on a national scale by influencing governments and other agencies with our lessons learnt. And we strengthen local organisations on the ground to ensure they can deliver lasting change in the countries where we work.
We have over 35 years’ experience working with local partners across Africa to improve the lives of children with disabilities. Initially founded in 1984 as the Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC), we became Able Child Africa in 2007 and began supporting local partners other countries in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. We now use the expertise we have built up over the last 35 years to make lasting change for children with disabilities across Africa.
While there has been substantial progress in access to education over recent decades, children with disabilities have continued to fall through the net. Only one in ten has access to any form of schooling and of this number only half who begin, go on to complete their primary education. Most drop out after a few months due to feelings of exclusion, isolation or stigma.
We promote the realisation of equal rights for children with disabilities and their families in Africa and facilitate their meaningful inclusion in all aspects of life.
We want a world in which all children with disabilities are fully included as equal members of society and are able to achieve their full potential.
Protect. Educate. Empower.
We protect children with disabilities so they can feel safe and secure.
We educate children with disabilities so they can fulfil their potential.
We empower children with disabilities so they can fight for their rights.
