Who we are

Our vision is of a world free from serious alcohol harm – and our mission is to significantly reduce that harm in the UK.

Three values guide all our work:

Truthful – we seek and tell the truth

Compassionate – we care deeply about everyone seriously harmed by alcohol, whoever they are

Ambitious for Change – we are opimistic and determined

The role

We currently have ten trustees on our board, with skills and experience in charity leadership and governance, addictions psychiatry, academic research, public affairs, policing, and marketing. We are looking to a recruit a further two to three trustees.

In addition to duties and responsibilities set out in our Memorandum and Articles of Association, as well as guidance in the Code of Good Governance, rules of the Charity Commissioners and Companies House, all trustees need to exhibit the following:

a) Strong commitment to the vision, values and mission of Alcohol Change UK.

b) An ability to think strategically; that is, thinking of the big picture and the long-term, being impact-focused, and considering the relationship between internal and external factors.

c) An ability to work as part of a team, especially understanding and respecting the nature of collective decision-making.

d) Excellent communications skills, especially active listening, succinctness, clarity, positivity and tact.

e) Commitment to the 7 Nolan Principles on Public Life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

f) Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

g) A willingness to contribute your individual skills, knowledge and experience without acting as representative of any particular interest.

Trustees are appointed for an initial term of three or four years, following which they may be re-elected for a second and third term.

Trustee roles are unremunerated but reasonable travel, accommodation, childcare and subsistence expenses are of course covered.

Alcohol harm affects everyone in society, but it doesn’t affect everyone the same, so it is essential that our board has a good diversity of perspectives. In this recruitment round we are particularly looking to expand the board’s perspectives by recruiting trustees who are:

  • from minoritised racial communities, in particular Black and Asian communities and from those with a mixed heritage*.

Alcohol Change UK has a skilled and professional staff team. Nonetheless, it is always helpful to have a range of skills and knowledge on the board. In this recruitment round we are particularly looking to add additional knowledge in:

  • charity finance, with potential for taking on the role of Treasurer

If you have one or both of the above, then we will particularly welcome your application. But we welcome applications from anyone and will appoint the strongest candidates. We are looking for 2 to 3 new trustees.

* Our approach to trustee recruitment is consistent with Government guidance on the careful and lawful use of positive action (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/positive-action-in-the-workplace-guidance-for-employers/positive-action-in-the-workplace#executive-summary).
