Who we are

At Being The Cure, we’re on a mission to create a kind, honest, and humble World. Our goal is to nurture the next generation of society’s heroes through evidence-informed character education, instilling honesty, kindness, and humility in every child.

Our School for Heroism has recorded a staggering 64% rise in children acquiring a greater depth understanding of their moral values and 72% rise in children and youth understanding and displaying humility in their actions.

Your role: As our Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will be the guiding force behind our organisation’s strategic direction, supporting our CEO to deliver operational excellent and facilitating the effective engagement of our trustees. Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

  • CEO facilitation: Collaborate closely with the CEO, supporting them to build the systems and culture necessary to effectively deliver the mission and strategic objectives of the charity.
  • Strategic leadership: Provide visionary leadership to the Board, ensuring governance and operations aligns with our mission and strategic objectives.
  • Governance oversight: Oversee governance processes and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Foster positive relationships with key stakeholders, including trustees, donors, partners, and the wider community.
  • Board development and engagement: Support the professional development and effective engagement of Board members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Organisational ambassador: Serve as the public face of Being The Cure, representing our values and mission with passion and integrity.

Essential:

  • Leadership experience: Demonstrable experience in leadership roles, ideally within the charity or education sector.
  • Board experience: Previous experience serving on a Board of Trustees.
  • Strategic vision: Ability to think strategically and drive organizational growth and impact.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders many of whom are volunteers.
  • Commitment to mission: Passion for our mission and values, with a dedication to making a positive impact in the community.

Desirable:

  • Chair experience: Previous experience chairing a Board of Trustees or similar governing body.
  • Sector knowledge: Familiarity with the charity and education sector, including relevant policies and best practices.

Our current chair’s perspective: “Being part of the transformative journey with the children at Being The Cure is an amazing experience. The dedicated efforts of our BtC teachers and volunteers truly make a profound impact, empowering children to understand and embrace their own moral compass while actively contributing to the greater good in our community. Collaborating with Vijith (CEO) and our exceptionally qualified and experienced board is fun and inspiring. It constantly challenges me to evolve my thinking and enhance my own professional practice while rewarding me the privilege of witnessing profound positive change in our young people.”

Governance and current context: Presently, our board is composed of 8 trustees, and we are currently in the interview process for recruiting a new Treasurer and Fundraising Specialist. The addition of a new Chair will bring our total board membership to 11 trustees in 24/25, in accordance with our constitution’s maximum allowance of 12 board members. Our full board convenes four times annually, with our three board subcommittees (Strategy, Finance, and Risk Committee; Education and Safeguarding Committee; Fundraising and Marketing Committee) also meeting once per quarter.

Transition in leadership: Our current Chair will be stepping down from their role due to health and personal reasons. While we are saddened by this news, we express immense gratitude for Ben’s leadership and the significant impact he has had on our organization. Ben remains dedicated to facilitating a comprehensive handover to ensure a seamless transition for the incoming Chair. Furthermore, Ben will continue to serve on the board and act as Chair of our Strategy, Finance, and Risk Committee. We are confident that Ben’s guidance during this transition will facilitate the successful integration of the new Chair, contributing to the continued success of the charity.
