We empower local people to address the inequalities they experience and to achieve their economic, educational and social potential.
We do this by acting as a force for good through our own range of services, by lobbying for change, and by working collaboratively with socially responsible partners to improve our local community together.
We use walk in services and our award winning online legal clinic set up in response to Covid 19 to provide free, fair and accessible advice on benefits, housing, employment and consumer rights, debt and family and domestic violence issues in a safe non stigmatised environment.
The purpose of the Clinic is to increase access to expert legal advice and information to those who cannot afford it. There is no charge for using our service.
We reach all parts of the local community through our centre, collaborations with the food bank, community organisations and other legal and advice centres in our borough to help local people feel supported to problem solve.
We welcome any age, family dynamic, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality or disability and pride ourselves on helping people who face barriers to services and opportunities to have a less challenging route to inclusion in society. We have over our 50 years helped thousands of people build more secure lives whether it was a small form to help access benefits, a large case to retain housing or the myriad of other ways advice can nurture community through security, safety and knowing your rights.
Located in Lambeth, equidistant between Brixton and Herne Hill, Brixton Advice Centre (BAC) has offered free legal advice services since 1966. BAC is a Registered Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. Over the last 50 years and counting, its staff, volunteers and Trustees have made it possible for tens of thousands of local people to access life changing free legal advice services.
We provide free legal advice on housing, debt, welfare benefits, consumer and employment rights, family law, domestic violence, health and care issues and discrimination info including specialist information for older and younger people.
We are funded predominantly through a local authority contract, a range of grant funding and through a legal aid contract and also via donations.
Until the pandemic we operated largely through our face-to-face drop-in service but our ground-breaking response to lockdown saw us develop an award-winning fully-online legal advice service. One aspect of this service, the Online Legal Clinic, won the award for Best Contribution by a Pro Bono Clinic at the National LawWorks Awards in 2020 and was also nominated in the Best New Pro Bono Activity category too.
We are looking for a person with a finance background to join our friendly and engaged Board of Trustees as a Treasurer and take an active part in the financial decision-making of the Centre.
The Treasurer is a key role on our Board and provides Trustee level oversight into the financial operations of the Centre. This is done primarily through preparing a short financial report once a month for the board in conjunction with the Finance Sub-Committee and Chief Executive. Given the nature and remit of the role, a suitable financial background is important. The role may also include some interaction with our bookkeeper.
The Trustee board normally meets once each month (the last Wednesday in the month) at 6.30pm. They usually last no longer than 2 hours. Meetings have been a mix of face-to-face and video conferencing e.g. Zoom/Teams. The Finance Sub-Committee also meets once a month (via video conference), usually shortly before each normal board meeting.
We particularly welcome applications from people of colour or any BAME background, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people with disabilities or mental health conditions, all socio-economic brackets, career stages or educational backgrounds.
We are interested from hearing from applicants with expertise or experience of one or more of the following:
· Budgeting and cashflow forecasting
· Advising on strengthening and streamlining internal controls system
· Setting financial strategy
· Developing financial proposals
· Monitoring outsourced bookkeeping services
