Who we are

Leprosy remains a scourge for millions of people because of the prejudice and discrimination that is still prevalent. This is still the case since LEPRA pioneered the first cure for the disease in 1945.

Lepra today continues to stand out as a beacon of hope and professionalism in the battle against the world’s oldest identifiable disease. Indeed, for almost 100 years Lepra has been at the forefront of delivering high quality services according to need in a way that is evidence-led and secular, discriminating against no one. Working mainly in India and Bangladesh, with smaller activities implemented with partners in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Lepra is touching the lives of tens of thousands of people.

With three trips to India annually as an ex officio member of the board of Lepra India, and leading the board in the UK, the role requires about 2 days per month. With board meetings in London but currently virtual, location is not an issue. What is more important is your experience and determination.

The organisation has a strong board, is financially sound, plays a huge role in influencing policy, and is regarded as one of the preeminent organisations in the leprosy field. It is now seeking a new Chair to lead the board.

You could come from any sector. Indeed, you do not need to be an expert in infectious diseases and public health, but you must have a willingness to learn. You will be diplomatic, have some experience as a trustee or chair, and have the confidence to work with a group of highly intelligent and passionate colleagues.

More information can be found in the Lepra - Candidate Pack - Chair - 2020. Application deadline Monday 10th August.
