HELP US TO MANAGE OUR RESOURCES EFFECTIVELY TO improve the quality of life of people in need in CROYDON

Croydon Almshouses Charities (CAC) is looking to recruit an experienced accountant to a voluntary position on the Board of our Company, which acts as the corporate Trustee for the Charity, and to Chair its Finance & Audit Committee. It is likely our governance structure will change in 2024, to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

The main focus of the Charity, which was founded in 1447, is the provision of almshouses (similar to supported housing) for older people in Croydon and Mitcham, through our modern, purpose-built Elis David Almshouses in Croydon, which houses up to 60 residents, and the historic Mary Tate’s Almshouses in Mitcham, which house seven residents.

A linked charity, Croydon Relief in Need, provides grants to other charitable organisations and individuals in need in Croydon.

Both charities contribute to our mission is to improve the lives of people by supporting them to meet their own needs, fulfil their potential and become an active member of their community. We aim to fulfil this mission through achieving our ambitious, soon-to-be-published 2024-2028 Strategy: Do More, Do Better.

The Charity is well-resourced, with an excellent track record of effective financial management. Annual turnover is c£1.5m, and total funds are c£35m. Day-to-day financial management is overseen by the CEO and Strategic Finance Manager.

As Chair of the Finance & Audit Committee you would be expected to lead for, and advise, the Board on all financial matters relating to the strategic and operational management of the Charity, by working in partnership with the staff team, including:

· oversight of the budget development and monitoring processes;

· financial reporting and audit;

· risk management; and

· investment policy.

Whether you are an experienced Charity/Finance Director or Trustee, or wanting to take your first steps at Board level, we would like to hear from you.

It is essential that you are a qualified accountant (CCAB or CIMA) with experience of operating at a strategic level, and personal or professional links to Croydon.

We are seeking to achieve a greater diversity in our Board so that we are representative of the people we serve, and whilst welcoming applications from all backgrounds, particularly encourage candidates who would help us achieve our aim.

As a Director you will receive:

· Induction, training & reimbursable expenses

· Opportunities to make strategic decisions

· Influence to shape the development of the Charities and the services we provide

· The chance to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of older people and others in need in Croydon and Mitcham.

The expected time commitment is four Board meetings per year, four sub-Committee meetings and a Board seminar. Directors are also welcomed at various residents’ functions as we are proud of our almshouse community, whilst also wanting to be part of the wider community.

For an informal chat with Hayley James, CEO and/or an application pack, please contact Sophie Jones, Executive Assistant via [email protected].

Deadline for applications: Monday 16th October 2023

Expected interview dates: w/c 30th October 2023
