Who we are
We’re England’s leading creative writing charity for young people. Our professional writers empower students from under-resourced and under-represented communities with the confidence and skills to tell their own stories.
Our year-long enrichment provision combines deep learning for a core cohort, with opportunities for the whole school to benefit from writing creatively. It’s a fulfilling extracurricular programme, including workshops, events, competitions, training and support for teachers, plus exceptional progression routes for participants. Over the past 14 years we have expanded into four English regions – London, East Midlands, Yorkshire and now we are expanding to the North West.

We are looking for two new trustees to join the board who will support us to deliver our new strategy Reach and Impact and to make a real difference with your skills and experience. It is an exciting time – we aim to grow our programmes reaching more young people and building exciting future progression routes for them. We are especially keen to attract applicants from the communities we serve. We welcome applicants based in all our regions and people with diverse socio-economic and heritage backgrounds.
Term of service
Trustees of First Story are usually expected to serve for a minimum of four years. After the period of four years, a trustee’s commitment may be extended for another term by mutual agreement.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for people who are committed to our values and who can take a role in steering the charity for the future and champion our work externally. Each of our board members brings something different to the board; we work as a team, but we value everyone’s individual contribution. You don’t need experience of being a board member, but you will need:
- · Time and willingness to take part
- · Willingness to learn and improve your contribution over time
- · an ability to think strategically and to make constructive criticisms of management reports, finances, forward plans, overall objectives, major resourcing issues and potential risks. As board members, it is more important that we ask intelligent questions than know the answers.
- · Financial and accountancy skills for the Treasurer role available.
- · Be over 18 years of age
