Who we are

HF Mencap is the only disabilities charity in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham that focuses solely on people with learning disabilities, autism, and other developmental conditions. It is affiliated with the national Royal Mencap Society but is an independent charity that needs to secure all its own funding.

The charity provides a wide range of service-user led activity.

The role

The role is voluntary, with any necessary out of pocket expenses reimbursed. The time allocation is envisaged to be a day a month, including attending Board Meetings which take place quarterly. There is a mix of remote and local work.

Appointment is for a three-year term with the opportunity to be re-appointed for a further term of up to three years.

As a Trustee you will help HF Mencap continue to provide the highest standards of professional, specialist support and care for the people who use our services and set a clear, ambitious direction for the charity’s future. The Trustees have overall responsibility for ensuring the charity is well-run and meets legal requirements, charitable objectives, and those of good governance. You will use your personal skills and experience to help the Board of Trustees in reaching structured and sound decisions.

The current social and economic pressures have put the needs of those living with learning disability further down the national agenda. You will be helping to keep their voice heard and enabling a local charity to take an even more active role in helping to address the inequality faced by so many of them. As Company Secretary you will help to underpin the charity’s credibility by maintaining high standards of governance and reporting.

Before
you apply

It is desirable but not essential to have previous Trustee and/or
Company Secretary experience as appropriate training and mentorship can be
provided. Your skills could come from a corporate governance, legal or business
background such as accountancy or office and administration management. You do
need to be organised, methodical, and able to ensure that HF Mencap fulfils its
governance and reporting requirements, both as a charity and limited company.

Personal connection to people living with learning disability and/ or
autism either by means of a family relationship or work experience is
desirable, but if not present a strong affinity with HF Mencap’s cause is
needed.

Being inclusive is a fundamental value of HF Mencap. Please let us know
if you need any assistance or adjustment so that we can help with making the
application process work for you.

If there is anything you want to discuss prior to applying, please
e-mail trustees@hfmencap.org to
arrange a call.

Please provide a comprehensive cv with your full name and contact
details by April 2nd, 2024 (at the latest), together with a supporting
statement setting out why you are for applying for this role and how you meet
the person specification. Details of the role and person specification are in
the attached document. Any appointment will be subject to the receipt of two
satisfactory references.

HF Mencap is
committed to safeguarding and protecting the people it works with. Accordingly,
Trustees will be subject to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Trustees will
be expected to declare that they are eligible and willing to act as a Charity
Trustee and Company Director and that they comply with the fit and proper
persons test in relation to HF Mencap’s registration with HMRC as a charity for
tax purposes.
