Who we are
The London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s leading contemporary music ensembles. We produce world-class new music projects & performances that engage with today’s society, involving and inspiring the lives of individuals, audiences, communities and artists. Our ethos is to experiment constantly with the art form, collaborating with young people, communities and the public to produce music projects often involving film, theatre, dance and art.
The role
The London Sinfonietta Council/Board of Trustees ensures that the activities of the charitable company (Sinfonietta Productions Ltd) meet public benefit requirements. It currently includes 10 members: six independents with a range of background and experience, the Chief Executive and two Principal Players.
We are now looking to recruit up to three new Board Members who will enjoy giving their time and energy to support the organisation and ensure that we benefit from a range of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
We would encourage applications from those beyond the music or creative arts sector and those with a commercial background to broaden our expertise. The areas in which we particularly seek support for the next phase of the London Sinfonietta’s ambitions are:
- Business development and change management
- Fundraising and growing and diversifying our income base
- Communications and demonstrating impact
- Audience development and marketing, including via data-driven insight
Charity trustees are unpaid, however we believe that this role can secure non-financial rewards, including contributing to the arts and wider charitable sector, providing post-holders with opportunities to grow and develop their own leadership and career aspirations, broadening personal outlooks and experience, and enhancing confidence as a board and committee member.
It is not necessary to have previous board or committee experience, although applicants should have regard to the role description and the responsibilities of a charity trustee. Where learning or development support may be required, this can be highlighted in the application process.
Time commitment
c. 4 board meetings a year (normally 6-8pm), plus a short AGM and at least one annual Board/management team strategy day.
Council members are also expected to join at least one of the Board’s sub-committees, according to specific skills and interests, which meet for two or three times a year, normally for two hours during the daytime.
Additional time is required on an ad hoc basis, both for support and advice to the Board and management team and to attend London Sinfonietta performances wherever possible.
Council members are appointed for a three-year term, renewable for a maximum of nine years.
