Who we are
Malaria is one of the oldest killer diseases in history; even now, despite recent progress, it claims the life of a child every minute. Malaria No More UK is part of a global movement that is determined to make this the generation that beats this killer. To realise this vision, we need to mobilise governments, influencers, businesses and the public, inspiring them to commit funds, energy and resources to ending deaths from malaria and wiping out the disease for good.
The role
Key responsibilities
- Scientific
Expertise: Possess a comprehensive understanding of the scientific landscape, encompassing
both established and emerging malaria interventions. Stay updated with the
latest research, advancements and innovative
technologies relevant to malaria prevention, diagnosis
and treatment. Strategic Guidance: Provide strategic insight and advice to the
organisation’s leadership and fellow board members on scientific matters,
technological solutions and implementation approaches that can effectively
combat malaria. Collaborate with the board to define long-term objectives and
establish research priorities. - Global
Context: Stay informed about the evolving global context surrounding malaria,
including changes in disease prevalence, regional challenges
and international efforts to combat the disease. - Partnership
Development: Identify and foster strategic partnerships with scientific institutions,
research organisations and technology companies involved in malaria related
work. Collaborate with external stakeholders to leverage their expertise and resources
for the organisation’s benefit. - Ensure that
the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in the governing documents. - Ensure that
the organisation complies with its governing document, charity and company law
and any other relevant legislation or regulations. - Work in
partnership with the Chief Executive and senior management to actively support
Malaria No More UK to realise its objectives. - Hold the
Chief Executive and other directors/senior management accountable, providing
constructive challenge where necessary. - Be
available to assist and advise MNM UK senior staff in the UK and Africa - Act as an
ambassador and advocate for Malaria No More UK and utilise experience and
personal networks to help expand the charity’s impact and income. - Attend
Board of Trustee meetings and committee meetings as appropriate in person or
virtually.
The estimated time
commitment required is eight – ten days per year. Board meetings usually last
2-3 hours, and currently take place 4 times a year.
We recognise you will
have other commitments. Being a Trustee on our Board does not have to mean an
onerous time commitment, and our culture of hybrid working means you do not have
to be in London to contribute.
Person specification
- A strong background in science and technology, preferably
with a focus on infectious disease, public health
or related fields. - Extensive knowledge and experience in malaria research, interventions and the broader landscape of global
health. - Familiarity with cutting edge
technologies and innovations relevant to malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment. - Genuine
interest in the vision and purpose of MNMUK, with commitment to ending malaria. - Extensive experience in scientific research
and/pr technological innovation related to infectious diseases, preferably with
a focus on malaria. - Commitment
to regularly attend board meetings and read papers in advance. - A
commitment to impartiality, fairness and
confidentiality. - Good
communication and interpersonal
skills. - Good
independent judgement and the willingness to speak their mind. - Willing
to be on hand with advice and expertise on an ad hoc occasional basis by email
or phone.
