Who we are

The National Autistic Society is the leading UK charity for people with autism (including Asperger syndrome) and their families. Founded some 57 years ago, we have been pioneering new ways to support people and understand autism. With a turnover of around £100 million each year, we continue to learn every day from the children and adults we support in our 9 specialist schools (including 3 free schools) and adult care services.

Based on our experience and with support from our members, donors and volunteers, we also provide life-changing information and advice to millions of autistic people, their families and friends and we support professionals, politicians and the public to understand autism better so that more autistic people of all ages can be understood, supported and appreciated for who they are.

Could you help to lead the UK’s foremost autism charity?

Since we began some 57 years ago, we have been pioneering new ways to support people and understand autism. With a turnover of around £100 million each year, we continue to learn every day from the children and adults we support in our nine specialist schools (including three free schools), and adult care services.

Based on our experience and with support from our members, donors and volunteers, we also provide life-changing information and advice to millions of autistic people, their families and friends. And we support professionals, politicians and the public to understand autism better so that more autistic people of all ages can be understood, supported and appreciated for who they are.

We are looking to appoint a trustee who has a good knowledge of schools and education and can chair one of our school’s local governance bodies in the South East or Greater London area and also sit on the board’s education, quality and development committee. Experience of SEN and of special schools would also be helpful.

Candidates need to share our passion for realising a better world for people on the autism spectrum and show a track record of networking at a senior level to achieve strategic impact.
