Who we are

Refugees and asylum seekers are among the most vulnerable people in our society today. These people have fled their countries of origin due to fear of war, torture or persecution. They have often also suffered great hardships in their journey to the UK. The circumstances of these people arriving into the UK can lead to them being socially excluded due to poverty, mental health problems, lack of knowledge of British ways and lack of English.
New Citizens’ Gateway ( helps refugees and asylum seekers deal with the very challenging circumstances that they find themselves in. We seek to help these people to recover from their often traumatic experiences and to start rebuilding their lives in the UK.

We are particularly interested to hear from individuals with one or a combination of the following:

  • Lived experience of having lived as or with refugees or asylum seekers or having worked in this field.
  • Experience of fundraising. We wish to develop our fundraising strategy diversifying our income streams based on experience of a range of successful fundraising approaches.
  • Skills in stakeholder engagement. We wish to further improve the ways in which the board and organisation listens to and learns from our clients, partners, funders and local community
  • Charity governance and board administration skills and experience.

These are unpaid voluntary roles, however reasonable out-of-pocket expenses can be reimbursed. The time commitment includes 6 formal meetings (5 trustee meetings and 1 AGM) per year which take place mid-week evenings in Colindale, London. In addition, it is desirable that trustees can devote at least 4 hours per month to participating in or leading organisational development and governance projects.

New Citizens’ Gateway is the working name of Barnet Refugee Service which is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee.

To apply, please send us a copy of your CV and a covering letter which includes what skills you are bringing to our Board and why you are applying for the role. Send by email via email by 5th February 2022 to [email protected]. If you have questions or would like a discussion, please contact us at the same email address.
