Now Teach is a charity that finds and supports career changers in teaching. We partner with schools, universities and training providers, support career changers and connect them with a strong professional network to amplify impact and accelerate progress.

About Now Teach

Career-changers bring new experiences into the classroom, but they often need support to complete their training and stay in teaching. We offer Now Teachers one-to-one support, alongside a comprehensive structured programme helping them change career successfully. This support continues after they’ve completed their training, and the Now Teach Network is there to help make the most of their experience and skills as career-changers.

Our support helps Now Teachers stay in teaching and over 90% of our cohort are satisfied or very satisfied with the support they get from Now Teach.

We have a strong brand, a robust, efficient selection process and a programme of wrap around support that has been honed over several cohorts. Since 2016, over 17,000 people have expressed interest in joining Now Teach and we have recruited over 850 career changers with significant industry experience into teaching. In September 2023, we welcomed our largest cohort of trainees.

We are looking for driven and committed people to help us meet new goals, increase our Network and create more impact in schools.

Role Overview

Oversee all financial aspects of the Charity on behalf of the Board of Trustees to evaluate our financial position and associated risks.

Assist the Chair and the Chief Executive in ensuring that the Board of Trustees fulfils its duties and responsibilities for the proper financial governance of the charity.

Act as Chair for the Finance & Risk Committee, ensuring the Committee is working effectively, has appropriate membership and reports back to the Board on key issues and decisions.

Skills and Experience

  • ACCA / ACA / CIMA or equivalent qualified with at least 10 years PQE
  • Knowledge of current accounting practices and financial regulations governing charities and companies
  • Experience leading a finance department with strong strategic planning skills
  • Ability to challenge and engage
  • Ability to digest, present and critically evaluate a range of information, including written reports, statistics, and verbal communications
  • Able to commit sufficient time to Board and Committee meetings, and time working with the Now Teach CEO and Executive
  • Experience in the charity sector preferable but we would also consider skills from the private sector


Key Responsibilities:

In partnership with the CEO & COO

  • Ensure that the charity operates within the financial guidelines set out in current legislation by the Charity Commission, in the Charity’s Constitution and by the Board
  • Identify and bring to the attention of the Board any financial risks facing the Charity
  • Provide feedback on the reserves policy and ensure that this policy is reviewed and monitored regularly
  • Protect and manage the property of the Charity and to ensure the proper investment of the Charity’s funds
  • Review the proposed annual budget, cash flow forecasts and financial reports and provide feedback to the Board.
  • Review longer term forecasts of capital resources and of income and expenditure, and to review and monitor financial trends within the Charity and the sector within which the Charity operates
  • Be a member of appropriate Board committees and internal working groups

To assist the Chair, other Trustees and the CEO

  • By ensuring that the Board of Trustees fulfils its duties and responsibilities for the proper financial governance of the Charity
  • Keep the Board informed of its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Advise the Board on financial implications and operational risks arising from Board decisions, especially the Board’s strategic and policy decisions
  • Advise the Board on the financial strategy proposed by the CEO and review and monitor the financial strategy on behalf of the Board
  • Work with the CEO and COO to ensure financial information is presented in a way that facilitates good financial governance, and enables the Board to fulfil its legal and statutory responsibilities

Expected time commitment

The Board meetings 3-4 times a year held either virtually or in-person. In addition, the Finance & Risk Committee meets 3-4 times per year, either virtually or in-person. You will meet monthly or bi-monthly with the COO to discuss key issues, manage risk and plan and may be asked for input on matters arising in between Committee and Board meetings.
