Who we are
Outside In provides a platform for artists who encounter significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance, or isolation.
It is an important and rare example of an organisation with national reach championing the work of artists excluded from the art world.
Outside In provides a digital platform for its artists to show their work and three programmes of activity: artist development, exhibitions, and training.
The role
Our new trustee will need to have an evidenced knowledge and interest in the visual arts and a commitment to championing diversity in the art world, drawing upon personal experience, relevant employment or from other roles, and to lead on this area at board level.
Outside In has an exceptional trustee body who are deeply engaged with the charity. As such you will play a key role at Outside In. You will help the charity to achieve its aims by creating real, lasting change. You will help us make balanced and informed decisions about our way forward, making sure that the needs of those who use our services are put first.
You will have a key role in managing the charity, ensuring we comply with our governance and legal requirements and avoid personal conflicts of interest when making decisions. Trustees are relied on to act responsibly, reasonably, and honestly.
To ensure everyone has an equal chance, we will make reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process. If you would like to discuss reasonable adjustments or the Trustee role, please contact Clair Montier, via email [email protected]
Board meetings are usually held four times a year during normal office hours either in London or remotely via Zoom. Relevant paperwork will be distributed the Friday before the meeting for your prior perusal, and all Trustees are expected to acquaint themselves with the contents.
A trustee position at Outside In is a volunteer role. It is unpaid but reasonable expenses can be claimed where appropriate.
About the charity
Outside In provides a platform for artists who encounter significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance, or isolation.
It is an important and rare example of an organisation with national reach championing the work of artists excluded from the art world. It was formed in 2006 at Pallant House Gallery and won the Charity Award for Arts and Heritage in 2013. It became an independent charity in 2017 and gained National Portfolio Organisation status with the Arts Council England in 2018, winning a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in 2022.
Outside In provides a digital platform for its artists to show their work and three programmes of activity: artist development, exhibitions, and training. These activities, supported by fundraising and communications, all aim to create a fairer art world by supporting artists, creating opportunities, and influencing organisations.
The charity has developed its regional presence and now has hubs in the South of England, the Midlands and the North West with plans to develop a hub in the South West.
