Who we are

Salusbury World is a charity supporting refugees and migrant helping young people and families to realise their rights and potential. The charity aims to empower refugees and migrants to develop the skills and confidence they need to navigate and succeed in society, and feel supported and hopeful for the future.

The role

These are crucial roles, and you would be joining us at a pivotal time. As part of our board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to help refugees overcome practical barriers but also give opportunities to experience joy, intellectual and creative fulfilment, and hope for the future.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Duties:

  • Support and provide advice on Salusbury Worlds’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
  • Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
  • Oversee Salusbury World’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
  • Review and approve Salusbury World’s financial statements.
  • Provide support and challenge to Salusbury World’s Director
  • Keep abreast of changes in Salusbury World’s operating environment.
  • Contribute to regular reviews of Salusbury World’s own governance.
  • Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
  • Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Salusbury World’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
  • Contribute to the broader promotion of Salusbury World’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge, and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking and expertise on our board.

You should have a clear understanding of the legal duties of Trusteeship and some experience working at a strategic governance level. Previous Board experience is not mandatory but would be an advantage. We’re open to applications from anyone with relevant senior level experience, but we are particularly interested in hearing from those with the following experience:

  • Governance in a small charity
  • Local Authority or Public Sector
  • Social Welfare / Welfare Advice Services
  • Fundraising and Events
  • Small charity or business leader
  • Finance director or Board Level experience

Personal skills and qualities

  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
  • An understanding of charity governance and the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a Trustee
  • Relevant and demonstrable experience in the voluntary sector or transferrable skills from the public or private sector
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Enthusiasm for our vision and mission.
  • Willingness to lead according to our values.
  • The ability to work effectively as a member of a team
