Who we are
Sanctuary Hosting is a charity founded in 2015 by Oxford City of Sanctuary to provide one solution to the problem of homeless sanctuary seekers on our streets. We match destitute refugees, asylum seekers or vulnerable migrants with hosts who can offer a spare room, rent free, for an agreed period of time. We operate across the Thames Valley, mainly in Oxford, Reading, Marlow and Milton Keynes. In the past five years we have helped 116 people from 27 countries and provided over 23,000 nights of accommodation. In that time we have worked with a pool of over 80 host families and more than 50 volunteer support workers.
Sanctuary Hosting is looking for new board members with a sympathy for the needs of sanctuary seekers. Experience of the refugee sector is not essential but we would be interested in hearing from people with a background in homelessness or mental health services. We would also particularly like to hear from you if you have experience of business planning, organisational development, or financial management.
We have a small office base in Oxford but we work throughout the Thames Valley, in Oxfordshire, Milton Keynes, Reading and Marlow.

Since we began in 2015 we have provided over 23,000 nights of accommodation and helped 116 individual guests. We have kept operating throughout the pandemic but with reduced numbers because of hosts having to withdraw as a result of shielding or other issues. In some cases we have provided financial support as an alternative to hosting. We currently have 8 guests being hosted and 6 more supported financially. Our pool of hosts (80 households over the past five years) and around 50 volunteer support workers are managed and supported by a staff team of four, mostly part-time. We are funded by a mixture of grants and donations and are secure for the next financial year but concerned about long-term sustainability.
The board currently meets remotely by Zoom six times a year. We also have subcommittees dealing with finance, fundraising, and guest welfare, and new trustees would be invited to join one of these.
