Who we are
St Luke’s Advice Service (SLAS) is a small charity founded on Christian values, based in central Brighton. We help some of the most vulnerable people in Brighton and Hove by providing practical support and advice to help them overcome financial hardship and access benefits they desperately need. Last year our small team of paid staff and volunteers helped over 800 people.
What makes us special is the time and compassion we offer each person who approaches us for help. We help people become who
The role
We are now
looking for a new trustee with governance accountabilities willing to bring
energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the
diversity of thinking on our board. Whilst you may not have previous board
level or trustee experience, we are looking for someone who has experience of
governance matters, preferably in the charity or public sector.
This trustee
role will be of interest to those keen to contribute to the governance and risk
management of the charity, ensuring that we continue to be efficient, effective
and compliant with statutory and other requirements. A background in governance and assurance, or operational
management and/or non-financial audit would be useful, and we are looking for a
critical friend, prepared to make
unpopular recommendations to the board when required. We will provide appropriate induction including
‘pairing’ with one of our existing trustees and access to external training and
relevant resources.
As a
small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively
involved beyond Trustee Committee meetings. This may involve scrutinising or
preparing board papers, leading discussions, providing advice and guidance on
new initiatives, presenting externally, or directly supporting the Service
Delivery Manager on projects or aspects of operational delivery in which the
trustee has special expertise.
