Who we are

The Sussex Wildlife Trust has been championing wildlife and wild places across the rich natural heritage of East and West Sussex, and Brighton and Hove for over 60 years and we have been unwavering in our vision to deepen people's understanding of the beauty and importance of our natural world.

Since our very first nature reserve at Amberly Wildbrooks we have grown to include over 30 nature reserves across 4700 acres with our latest exciting offering being a new flagship visitor centre at Rye Harbour, which opened in May 2021.

Our mission is to work with diverse groups and individuals to take action for wildlife and wild places across all of Sussex and to restore abundant wildlife across large scale landscapes and the sea whilst creating climate resilient landscapes with thriving wildlife habitats together with farmers and land managers.

Our Trustees play a vital role in all aspects of our work; giving their time for free, like all our volunteers, they bring a wide range of knowledge, expertise and experience to the charity; they hold the financial and legal responsibility for everything Sussex Wildlife Trust does and are responsible for approving our annual budget and Annual Report & Accounts.

We are looking for someone with:

A connection to the Sussex and a commitment to the Trust, its work and values and  a way of working that demonstrates this

A good understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, liabilities and       responsibilities of trustees and clear on the difference between governance functions and management functions. Previous Board experience is desirable

Ability and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role

Strong strategic awareness and experience of high-level strategy development

Good communicator with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, able to both empower and challenge supportively

Good, independent judgement

An ability to think creatively

A willingness to speak their mind and voice opinions even if these are not shared by other trustees

An ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team
