Who we are

People suffering a breakdown of their mental health can undergo a devastating loss of self-confidence, which often results in isolation and loneliness, and it can take time and support for them to pick up the threads of their previous lives and move forward. Tandem is the only mental health service in Oxford city which links them with volunteers to enable supportive relationships to develop, and helps them to build up confidence, raise their aspirations and find opportunities for support within their local community.

The Board are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic volunteer who is keen to join our small group as a trustee, and will consider applications from applicants of any experience who are willing and able to commit to the role, as well as demonstrate that they fit into the ethos of the charity.    Any particular skills and experience such as fundraising, IT and social media, business or mental health experience would be very welcome, but commitment and participation are most important and all skills will be valued.

The primary requirement is to attend, as often as possible, board meetings, which take place in East Oxford once a month for about an hour, and to contribute enthusiasm and fresh eyes.   Minutes of previous meetings and agendas to be discussed are circulated electronically beforehand and are expected to be read by the trustees before the meetings.  The occasional Away Morning (one or two a year) are to discuss and implement strategies, involves a time commitment of up to three hours.  Additional tasks may result from the monthly meetings, and are undertaken by those trustees who have the time and inclination to follow them up.

Tandem was founded in 1999, and we are the only mental health charity in Oxford which provides one-to-one support to those who have suffered a mental health breakdown.  The need for our service has increased year by year, and is particular crucial as we come out of the pandemic.
