TGC (The Garden Classroom) is a multi-award winning charity based in Islington, London. Now in its 15th year TGC specialises in delivering transformational nature connection activities and programmes, typically working with state schools for many of its programmes, prioritising its service to disadvantaged communities.


The role

Treasurer responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and advice to the board of Trustees on financial matters and helping the board fulfil its responsibilities for the financial governance and direction of the organisation, such as appropriate accounting procedures, controls, compliance with legislation, reserves policy etc.
  • Working in partnership with the CEO, Finance Manager, and as necessary in liaison with the independent examiner, to ensure the production of key financial documents including statutory accounts, annual budget / master plan and where necessary management accounts.
  • Attend Finance and Fundraising Sub-Committee meetings as required (2 hours per term).
  • Liaise with the CEO, Senior Management Team, Finance Manager and Fundraising Manager on all financial matters.
  • To be a bank signatory for TGC and authorise payments according to the finance policy (approving payments over £1000 by email).
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and other trustee responsibilities as they arise, such as staff recruitment, policy reviews, organisational development etc.

Skills required:

  • Work experience in the field of finance, and possibly a financial qualification.
  • An understanding of budgets and of management and statutory accounts.
  • A knowledge of charity-specific financial matters such as restricted funding – or the ability and willingness to learn about such matters.
  • The ability to explain financial matters to people who don’t have specialist financial knowledge.
  • Experience of making decisions collectively on boards, committees or other types of working groups.
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for the aims of TGC.
  • A positive trouble-shooter applying a wealth of experience and skills.
