Who we are

Diversity Panel | Voluntary | Four meetings p.a. | Zoom/online for the time being

Initially created as a joint venture bringing together the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), Bates Wells and Russam, following a lengthy period of collaboration, in January 2021, TU became a wholly owned part of the Russam group. The organisation continues to work closely with NCVO and Bates Wells across several areas.

TU is a founding UK B Corporation. It has recruited hundreds of board members to a wide range of organisations. TU has also set up and runs the Step on Board programme, the leading senior level employee engagement programme which to date has helped c. 400 senior leaders from organisations such as Google, EY, and Barclays become Trustees.

The Role

TU has always pioneered thinking and practical action when it comes recruiting diverse talent. This can be seen in our production of tools such as Walking the Talk (a collaboration with New Philanthropy Capital), creating the Inspire List to showcase trustees from an ethnic background, and our recruitment of diverse candidates onto boards (currently c. 60% of recent appointments).

Under the leadership of Wakkas Khan DL, the panel was launched in 2019 and worked on developing the Inspire List. In thinking about the next phase of our work we are looking to develop the Diversity Panel with experts who will help us shape our thinking around how best to improve diversity on charity boards. The goal of the panel will be to generate not only thought leadership, but practical interventions that will really shift the dial in terms of diversity on boards.

We will initially focus on ethnic diversity but in time will turn our attention to other characteristics that are underrepresented on boards.

The Person

The ideal candidates will first and foremost believe wholeheartedly in the importance of board diversity. We are looking for experts, practitioners and experienced trustees from diverse backgrounds.

Moreover, he/she will have:

  • Experience of delivering EDI programmes or engaging in these issues at board level
  • Have operated at a senior leadership level within their area of expertise
