Who we are

Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the leading authority on diet and healthy living advice for older vegans and vegetarians. Since there are currently only two fully vegetarian care homes in the UK, one of VfL’s major goals is to improve the standard of vegan and vegetarian catering in existing homes. We seek to do this through our UK List, which is a geographical listing of organisations and care homes that make a special effort to cater for vegetarians and vegans. We are striving towards a vision where at least 1 in every 6 UK care homes are members of our UK List – and 1 in every 100 will be VfL accredited. Meeting the needs of a diverse range of older people is important to us, too. You’ll help VfL become the first port of call for information, support and advice for older vegans, vegetarians, their families, friends and a broad range of care caterers.

The role

About the opportunity

Are you vegan or vegetarian and believe that you should be able to continue your lifestyle and uphold your beliefs and values throughout your life? Do you think it is important that older people who are vegan or vegetarian should have access to quality food when in need of care? Would you like to ensure older people can find trustworthy information and advice on healthy eating and rights whilst sustaining their vegan or vegetarian diet?

Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegans and vegetarians. We regularly review the skills and experience available across our board members and currently seek to recruit a trustee with experience in equity, diversity, and inclusion to support our policy and practice development work. Looking ahead to changes in the board’s membership, we also seek (one or two) trustees with experience of working with older people within health and social care.

Our trustees work with the CEO of VfL and her team to ensure good governance and realise the strategic aims and development of this unique charity. VfL has experienced sustained growth and impact since it was formed in 2007 and is highly respected for the breadth and quality of its work across care, advocacy, and catering sectors. The role of trustee is a voluntary one although expenses are paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing but with at least one meeting a year in Manchester where VfL is based. Full board meetings are held on a Saturday. Some communications occur between meetings (usually by WhatsApp or email) and occasionally additional (short) meetings are required to make decisions timeously – these will always be scheduled by arrangement with members.

To be considered for this role

You should have the skills and experience outlined above and be committed to the aims of VfL. You should be able to articulate the contribution you believe you can make to furthering these aims.
