Who we are

The Academy is a multifaceted business. The driving force and focus are the sailing events, but to sustain the facilities and business the WPNSA has several other revenue streams;

• Squad training through the RYA and class associations

• Other sporting events such as cycling, triathlons and running

• Meetings facilities including conferences and corporate days

WPNSA has close links with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) working with them in many significant events.

The role

WPNSA is a world class sailing venue based on the south coast. WPNSA works to promote the sport of sailing at all levels of competence and ability, both in the local community and globally. Home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing event as part of London 2021, WPNSA thrives on hosting high profile regattas on some of the most reputable sailing waters in the world. Off the water, WPNSA boasts excellent conference and event facilities, all with the stunning backdrop of Portland Harbour.

We are strengthening our Board. We are looking to recruit up to 5 to 6 additional non-executive volunteer Board members to enhance our current strengths on the WPNSA Board. There will also be an opportunity for a step-up to the Chair of the Board role from mid-2024 when our current Chair stands down.

The current Board has sailing experience in abundance, so we are looking for other diverse skills. As well as being a team player with the ability to work at strategic level, we are looking for people with the following experience:

  • Finance, ideally in not-for-profit sectors
  • Hospitality
  • Facilities Management
  • Business Development and Change Management
  • Community Development
  • Events Management
  • HR and Employment

We also want to recruit people with experience and understanding of the challenges faced by charity Chairs and those who share our values.

All roles on our Board are volunteer roles, we meet 4-5 times per year in Portland and expenses will be paid for travel and overnight accommodation if required. In addition to the Board meetings, you are likely to be required to answer emails and provide advice and information on an ad hoc basis equating to approximately 2-4 times per month.
