Strong governance is essential for charities, not-for-profit organisations and the trustees who lead them. It supports better decision-making, builds public trust and helps organisations stay focused on their mission.
The Charity Governance Code offers a clear framework for what good governance looks like. While it is not a regulatory requirement, it provides practical guidance that complements Charity Commission rules and helps trustees improve standards, behaviours and processes.

The 2025 Charity Governance Code
The updated Code sets out eight core principles and 41 outcomes that apply to charities of all sizes. These principles help trustees strengthen board effectiveness, accountability and oversight.
Charities are encouraged to use an “apply or explain” approach—either adopting the recommended practices or explaining alternative methods that suit their structure, whether they are small charities, membership organisations or faith-based bodies.
Putting the Code Into Practice
The Code highlights the importance of behaviours, board culture and tailored policies. It also encourages charities to show evidence of strong governance, giving funders and stakeholders confidence in how the organisation is run.
Many charities include a short statement in their annual report outlining how they use the Code. Those following sector-specific governance codes can simply state which framework they use.
Looking Ahead
The Charity Governance Code is reviewed regularly by a voluntary steering group, and a new, more interactive website will launch in 2026 to support trustees and not-for-profit organisations further.
