Reflecting on Leadership Appointments in 2025: Strengthening Governance for Impact

Over the past year, Trustees Unlimited has been privileged to support two distinguished organisations in appointing Chairs of Trustees, helping to shape leadership that will guide their missions for years to come.

Royal Commonwealth Society

The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), a global network dedicated to youth empowerment, equality, education, environmental action, and community connection, sought a new Chair following the conclusion of the previous Chair’s term. Trustees Unlimited supported the Council of the RCS through a thorough search and selection process, resulting in the appointment of Janet Cooper OBE.

Janet brings extensive experience in governance, law, entrepreneurship, and trusteeship, with a strong track record in promoting equality, women’s empowerment, and employee share ownership. Her appointment marks a new chapter for the RCS, ensuring the organisation continues to advance its mission across the Commonwealth’s 56 member nations while navigating an increasingly complex global landscape.

Janet Cooper OBE said:

“It’s a great pleasure and privilege to have been appointed to Chair the Royal Commonwealth Society, to build on the terrific work the RCS has been doing for over 150 years as well as look to the future, in a world which is becoming increasingly polarised and in conflict.”

Norfolk Wildlife Trust

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the UK’s oldest wildlife conservation charity, also turned to Trustees Unlimited to assist in appointing a new Chair of Trustees. The Trust oversees more than 60 nature reserves and works to protect and restore Norfolk’s wildlife through education, community engagement, and advocacy.

Following our search and advisory support, Matthew Bradbury was appointed as Chair. Matthew’s extensive environmental and cultural experience, including previous roles with the Trust, The Land Trust, and the Broads Authority, equips him to provide strategic leadership and champion nature recovery across Norfolk. His deep-rooted passion for wildlife and sustainable land management promises to guide the Trust in achieving meaningful conservation impact.

On his appointment, Matthew said:

“I am absolutely delighted to be a Trustee of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It is a role that I am honoured to hold, and I hope that my broad experience and passion for wildlife will add value to the organisation and its mission to secure nature recovery in Norfolk.”

Reflections

Both appointments highlight the importance of thoughtful, strategic trustee recruitment in strengthening organisational governance. By identifying Chairs with the right mix of expertise, leadership experience, and alignment with mission, Trustees Unlimited helps ensure organisations are well-positioned to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and maximise their societal impact.

We are proud to have contributed to these transitions and remain committed to supporting charities and not-for-profits in attracting leaders who can make a lasting difference.
