Who we are

Hay Castle Trust is a registered charity formed in 2011 to preserve this historic site and provide a future of cultural enrichment, educational opportunities and community enjoyment. The vision was to renovate this beautiful building and make it safe and useable for current and future generations, creating a cultural space in the vibrant Book Town of Hay on Wye, which is also home to the renowned Hay Festival.


The role

  • Museums and Galleries Experience/Expertise

We are looking for:

  • Museum sector engagement: to help the director and Curatorial team raise the profile and grow the reputation of Hay Castle in the museum sector.
  • Partnerships: helping to foster partnerships which help the Castle to achieve its creative, commercial and social objectives.
  • Governance: oversight as necessary of our Curatorial function; helping the team optimise joined-up thinking and coordination of the curatorial, educational and commercial teams.
  • Donor cultivation: suggesting new Arts funding sources and where appropriate, facilitating introductions and oversee applications.
  • Media/PR Experience/Expertise:

  • Strategic marketing: oversee the Executive Director and the Communications Manager through the implementation of a marketing strategy, which will set out how we promote what we offer, identifying the best channels to reach different audiences, and analysing and acting on results.
  • PR: knowledge of media networks and contacts, and experience to help HCT improve our national PR and make the news as we continue to generate stories that demonstrate the relevance and impact of our Offer.
  • Tourism: knowledge of the visitor economy in Mid Wales and the rural borderlands to ensure strategic partnerships and Return on Investment with tourism groups.
  • Brand: awareness of branding and overseeing the evolution of the HCT brand to expresses distinctiveness and core values.
  • General Skills:

    • Empathy with the Castle’s charitable strategy, purpose and values.
    • Ability to understand and engage with the Castle’s business and financial plans and risk mitigation procedures.
    • Offering constructive advice and guidance to the Executive Director
    • Willingness to promote the Castle through individual networks.
    • A readiness to play a role in fundraising and donor stewardship.

    Board Responsibilities

    • Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit.
    • Comply with the charity’s governing document and the law.
    • Act in the charity’s best interests.
    • Manage the charity’s resources responsibly.
    • Act with reasonable care and skill.
    • Ensure the charity is accountable.

    Trustee commitments

    • Ongoing advice, support and constructive challenge to the Executive Director.
    • Attendance at a minimum of 3 of the 4 Board meetings per year, in person at Hay Castle, typically 2 hours duration, 4-6pm.
    • Regular visits to the Castle to get to know the people and the place.
    • Attendance at some exhibition openings and fundraising events.
    • Commitment to a three-year term renewable by mutual agreement.
