Who we are
Hay Castle Trust is a registered charity formed in 2011 to preserve this historic site and provide a future of cultural enrichment, educational opportunities and community enjoyment. The vision was to renovate this beautiful building and make it safe and useable for current and future generations, creating a cultural space in the vibrant Book Town of Hay on Wye, which is also home to the renowned Hay Festival.
The role

General Skills:
- Empathy with the Castle’s charitable strategy, purpose and values.
- Ability to understand and engage with the Castle’s business and financial plans and risk mitigation procedures.
- Offering constructive advice and guidance to the Executive Director
- Willingness to promote the Castle through individual networks.
- A readiness to play a role in fundraising and donor stewardship.
Board Responsibilities
- Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit.
- Comply with the charity’s governing document and the law.
- Act in the charity’s best interests.
- Manage the charity’s resources responsibly.
- Act with reasonable care and skill.
- Ensure the charity is accountable.
Trustee commitments
- Ongoing advice, support and constructive challenge to the Executive Director.
- Attendance at a minimum of 3 of the 4 Board meetings per year, in person at Hay Castle, typically 2 hours duration, 4-6pm.
- Regular visits to the Castle to get to know the people and the place.
- Attendance at some exhibition openings and fundraising events.
- Commitment to a three-year term renewable by mutual agreement.
