Crustacean Compassion exists to promote the humane treatment and welfare of decapod crustaceans (animals such as crabs, lobsters, prawns and langoustines) and was founded in 2016 following news reports of crabs being sold alive fully-immobilised in shrink-wrap in UK supermarkets. Agencies were powerless to take action, because decapod crustaceans, as invertebrates, were not classified as “animals” under the UK’s animal welfare laws. The role
We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Campaigns and Policy – Bring your knowledge of advocacy and policy-making to support our CEO in developing effective, high-impact strategies that influence positive change.
- Corporate Engagement – Help us deepen our relationships with the food sector, guiding our approach to partnerships and sector-wide improvements.
- Legal and/or Governance – Ensure we remain compliant and operate with integrity by offering oversight and guidance on legal matters and governance best practices.
- Communications – Help expand our reach, grow our supporter base, and amplify our message through compelling storytelling and strategic communications.
- Fishing industry, food industry, and aquaculture = Provide guidance on industry engagement, developments in technology, and future movements in aquatic farming.
- Wild welfare – Assist the growth of our strategic development supporting decapod ecology and population health.
- Animal Welfare Research (Aquatic Care) – Provide expertise in fish and other aquatic species welfare to inform our research, campaigns, and policies with sound science.
