Who we are

The ABN is the professional body for neurologists in the British Isles. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of people with neurological disorders by advancing the knowledge and practice of neurology in the British Isles.


The role

What will you be doing?

Lay Trustees are members of ABN’s Council, contributing to the governance of the Association, attending trustee meetings and providing valuable input on strategic decision making.

  • Attending Council Meetings – Trustees are expected to attend full Council meetings which take place 3 times a year. Council meetings are an opportunity to discuss matters of governance and strategy and make decisions about the running of the Association. Trustees are expected to read the papers for each meeting and contribute to discussions as appropriate
  • Financial Management – Trustees join the FAR (Finance, Audit & Risk) Committee which has oversight of the Association’s budget, risk management procedures and other financial decisions (including investments)
  • Lending Expertise – Your experience in other fields will allow you to advise ABN’s Council and provide an external perspective on the organisation’s governance.

  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of the ABN
  • A commitment to the Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honest and leadership.

Experience of working at a senior level within an organisation (whether charitable or otherwise) would be welcomed but is not essential.

We are particularly hear from candidates who have a background in any of these areas: HR, marketing/communications, legal, finance, investments, fundraising and income generation.
