DESCRIPTION OF THE BSG
The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) is a medical membership charity focussed on supporting its members to provide the best care and achieve the best outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
The BSG is a professional membership organisation focused on the promotion of gastroenterology within the United Kingdom. It has over three thousand members drawn from the ranks of physicians, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, scientists, nurses, dietitians and others interested in the field. Founded in 1937 it has grown from a club to be one of the largest specialty societies, holding representation within the British Royal Colleges, health service and Government bodies. Internationally it is represented at World and European level. The BSG is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.

The role
British Society of Gastroenterology Lay Trustee
The BSG is seeking to appoint a Trustee with experience at a senior level in a finance, preferably investment discipline.The Board of Trustees are responsible for top-level governance, ensuring that key decisions made are in both the public, and BSG’s best interests.
The Board works closely with the Executive Committee and the Council, both comprised of medical professionals, who develop strategy and input to medical governance.
As a registered Trustee with the Charity Commission, you will have the opportunity to make a real impact through your contribution to the strategic direction and priorities of the BSG. You’ll achieve this through your attendance at Trustee Board meetings and Trustee Sub-Committee meetings, your liaison with BSG Executive, BSG Council and BSG Chief Executive, and your valuable insight and advice. As such, the BSG is looking to see that you have a thorough understanding of the role of a Trustee in a Charity and in the development of small organisations.
The Trustees meet 4 times a year (2 face to face and 2 virtual). There is also a strategy away day every 2 years.
This is a three-year appointment term with the opportunity to renew. It is an un-remunerated post – reasonable expenses incurred through the role will be reimbursed.
