Who we are
Care Rights UK is your care champion, the charity focused on promoting the rights of people in care.
We want people to know their rights and how to use them. We offer information, advice and support to empower people using care services and the relatives and friends who help them.
As a community of families and experts, we fight for better lives for people in care. We identify poor care and highlight good practice, and demand a better care system.
The role
Care Rights UK is a longstanding charity that has been supporting older people in need of care for over 30 years. With a strong balance sheet, we are in an exciting phase of growth, seeking to diversify and increase our reach across the UK. We are now looking for a new trustee to join our friendly, well-established Board of Trustees. As a trustee, you would play a vital role in the strategic oversight of the charity, supporting our small but dedicated team led by our experienced CEO.
We run the national adviceline for older people needing care, providing information, advice and support to empower people to understand their rights. We campaign for better lives for people in care by challenging poor provision, highlighting good practice, and pushing for a stronger, fairer care system. Although small, we punch well above our weight as a leading voice in the sector.
We are keen to hear from people with a positive, can-do approach and a passion for using their experience to promote the rights of older people. We are particularly interested in those with knowledge or experience of advice and support services, legal expertise, or first-hand experience of care services. These perspectives will help inform our work, but we also welcome applications from anyone with an interest in adult social care.
You do not need to have previous trustee experience. If you have a strong interest in our vision and strategy, we will provide support to help you understand the expectations of being on the Board.
We are committed to equality and diversity and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, or lived experience of care. We particularly encourage applications from groups currently underrepresented on our Board, including people from minoritised ethnic communities, women, and LGBTQ+ communities, to help ensure our leadership reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
What you can expect from us:
- Friendly, welcoming and supportive colleagues on the Board and in the staff team
- Timely, well-written Board papers in plain English, free from jargon
- One-to-one support from the Chair and regular reviews of Board operations
- Peer support from colleagues, including a buddy scheme
- A thorough induction to the charity, our work and mission
- Training to help you fulfil your trustee role
- Practical support from staff, such as booking travel for trustee activities
- Opportunities to share your skills and knowledge with colleagues who are experts in their fields
- The chance to be part of a dynamic team working for real change in the care sector
