We were founded to tackle the stark reality that 95% of adults with learning disabilities in the UK are unemployed—a statistic driven by systemic barriers, lack of accessible training, and employer misconceptions.

The role
Key Responsibilities
As a trustee, you will share collective responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of the organisation, including:

Ensuring the charity fulfils its purpose and delivers public benefit

Safeguarding the organisation’s financial sustainability

Supporting effective governance, accountability, and compliance

Contributing to strategic decision-making at board level
Specific Contributions of This Role
In addition to general trustee duties, this role will focus on strengthening Fair Shot’s fundraising pipeline and income growth.
Strategic Fundraising & Income Development

Provide strategic guidance on fundraising approaches and income diversification

Support the development of sustainable long-term income strategies

Contribute insight into major donor cultivation and stewardship
Donor & Network Connections

Actively connect Fair Shot to relevant philanthropic networks, HNWIs, trusts, and foundations
-
Facilitate warm introductions to potential donors and funding partners

Support the leadership team in building and strengthening a robust fundraising pipeline
-
Help identify opportunities for long-term funding relationships rather than one-off donations
Partnerships & Pipeline Development

Support the organisation in developing strategic relationships that lead to funding opportunities

Advise on how to position Fair Shot effectively within philanthropic and social impact networks

Provide guidance on navigating foundation and major donor engagement processes
Governance-Level Input

Contribute to board discussions on financial sustainability and growth

Provide constructive challenge and oversight on income strategy

Support alignment between fundraising, commercial income, and overall organisational sustainability
Skills and Experience Sought
We are particularly interested in candidates with:

Strong networks among philanthropists, HNWIs, or charitable foundations

Experience in major donor fundraising, philanthropy, or income strategy

Understanding of charity governance and trustee responsibilities

Familiarity with hybrid charity / social enterprise funding models

Strategic thinking and ability to operate at board level
Desirable backgrounds may include:

Wealth management or private banking

Philanthropy advisory or foundation leadership

Impact investing or social enterprise leadership

Senior roles in fundraising or partnerships
Time Commitment
Trustees are expected to contribute:

Approx. 3 hours per month

Quarterly triangulation meetings with staff

Two virtual board meetings per year
-
Two in-person board meetings per year
-
Two annual trustee training sessions
Additional engagement may include occasional introductions, advisory input, or support related to fundraising opportunities.
