The Fundraising Trustee Advocate is the champion of fundraising activity on Glaucoma UK’s Board of Trustees, overseeing the development and delivery of the charity’s fundraising strategy at governance level.

Who we are

Glaucoma UK is the charity for people with glaucoma. We campaign to raise awareness so that glaucoma is detected early and can be treated, we support people to live well with the disease and we fund sight-saving research. Our aim is to end preventable glaucoma sight loss.

We provide a range of free services to help people living with glaucoma, and everyone who cares for them.


The role

Time commitment

Trustees normally attend at least four Board Meetings a year. In addition, the Fundraising Trustee Advocate is a standing member of the Finance & Governance Committee, which also meets four times a year. Meetings are held virtually and/or in person. Most in person meetings are held in London. Ad hoc meetings may also take place, and time will be needed to read paperwork before and between meetings.

The Fundraising Trustee Advocate is expected to have regular (normally quarterly) meetings with the Head of Fundraising and may be required to represent the charity at events on occasion.

The term of office is three years, renewable.

Reimbursement

The role is not paid, but reasonable out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.

Training

A full induction programme as well as a range of training courses are available.

Key Responsibilities

In addition to the duties of a trustee, the Fundraising Trustee Advocate has a duty to:

1. Provide strategic input across fundraising areas including digital, legacy, corporate, and donor engagement.

2. Provide governance oversight as part of the Board of Trustees, ensuring fundraising activities comply with regulations, ethical guidelines, and best practices.

3. Act as a critical friend to the Head of Fundraising, offering support and constructive challenge.

4. Champion fundraising at Board level, ensuring alignment with the charity’s mission and values.

5. Act as an ambassador for Glaucoma UK, representing its vision and impact to prospective donors, corporate partners, and funders as required.

Person Specification

In addition to the qualities required of a trustee of the charity, the Fundraising Trustee Advocate should ideally:

1. have recent experience of fundraising, to include digital, traditional media, events and the use of AI in fundraising operations

2. be familiar with fundraising governance and regulation, including the requirements of the Charity Commission (including Fundraising Guidance for Trustees), the Fundraising Regulator, etc.

3. have an understanding of income diversification and sustainable fundraising models, including corporate partnerships, individual giving, and grants

4. have the ability to leverage networks to unlock new funding opportunities and connections and be willing to approach own contacts as required and appropriate

5. be comfortable in a Trustee support role, with good knowledge and judgement of any involvement and oversight required

6. be prepared to participate in relevant webinars, seminars, and training events, as required, and to keep up to date with fundraising regulations, trends and initiatives
