Who we are

Kanaama is a small UK-registered charity working to improve lives in poor rural communities in SW Uganda. Working through a local partner, we focus on improving livelihoods and education of women and children. Our livelihood projects include microcredit, village savings and loans, and training in literacy, agriculture and business. Our school-based projects include school attendance support, a breakfast club and kitchen construction, teacher training, menstrual health training and school WASH.

The role

In collaboration with the Board, you will map a future path for Kanaama and inspire the stakeholders. You will be prepared to ‘get the word out’ and to encourage trustees to do the same. Enthusiasm about Kanaama’s work in Uganda is a must and you will have ideas about how to develop it in the future.

This role is more than just chairing meetings. We don’t have paid staff in the UK, so you will set realistic goals for the day-to-day work which trustees (including the chair) undertake, as well as ensure they fulfil their roles as trustees. As the charity depends heavily on volunteers, you will assist in making sure volunteers are empowered to do the work they have signed up for. You will follow the work in Uganda closely and be the main liaison with the Chair of KICS Uganda.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and the role of the Chair
  • Commitment to the charity’s objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities
  • Strategic and forward-looking vision in relation to the charity’s objects and aims
  • Good, independent judgement, and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Balancing tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise
  • Proven resource mobilisation (ie, fundraising)
  • Ability to grow a team
  • Prior experience of committee/trustee work.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of development and Africa/Uganda
  • A wider involvement with the voluntary sector
  • An understanding of charity finance and charity fundraising
  • Leadership skills exercised through a period of change.

What difference will you make?

The Chair of Trustees has a huge impact on the success of our organisation. Your leadership and commitment will ensure we continue to support our local partner to deliver life-changing projects and to expand to meet the needs of many more poor and vulnerable women and children in more communities in SW Uganda.

There are six board meetings a year. These take place on Saturdays in mainly online as trustees are scattered. Around 6-8 hours Kanaama work is expected each month.
