Who we are
Proteus is an award-winning Theatre Company who believe that the audience is as important as the artist, and that to create truly dynamic and relevant theatre the audience and artist must inspire each other’s imagination. Quality, integrity and innovation are the values at the heart of our work and the criteria by which we judge our success. Formed in 1981 and based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, we have a long history of creating and presenting quality work that serves local and national audiences
The role
Proteus are actively looking for new members to join our board of Trustees and make a real difference. We are a company that believes we can change society for the better through radical acts of kindness, we believe in the power and value of the performing arts for all, and we work to make our local community a place where culture thrives.
As a trustee you’ll help us create the most exciting new theatre touring to venues across the Uk, support the most exciting Artists working in the performing arts right now and bring the best new theatre, circus, music, spoken word, visual art, cabaret, film and to communities in Basingstoke an affordable price.
Proteus is a theatre company and NPO making national and international touring work for mid-scale and studio spaces; but that’s not all we are, we also run an arts centre space, artists studios, a gallery, a cafe and a huge programme of work supporting Artists – we do such a ludicrously wide range of things, take a look at our video for a taster of just some of our work.
Being a Trustee of a charity like Proteus is a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. You’ll meet Artists from all areas of the industry and from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. You’ll meet and get to know the Proteus staff and other Board members – growing and learning alongside them, and most importantly you’ll help shape the future of one of the most exciting arts organisations in the South, creating work for stages across the UK & beyond and serving local communities with high quality art provision.
Who are we looking for
The most important quality we are looking for in our future board members is enthusiasm, we need and want individuals that are as convinced of the value and power of the arts in everyone’s lives as we are, and who love the idea of the arts as a galvanising force for social change. We are fully committed to diversity and inclusion and actively encourage people from a variety of backgrounds with different skills, experiences and stories to join us and influence and develop our working practice.
If there are some elements of being a trustee that you’re not sure you meet, please do still get in touch to have a conversation. We’re interested in the whole person and we help new trustees to develop skills on the job.
