Who we are

Stanley Arts is one of South London’s premiere arts and performance venues, providing our local community with a vital home for cultural expression and discovery. As a radically inclusive space we seek to foreground under-represented voices, providing artists of colour and LGBTQ+ creatives with a platform to reach out to audiences across South London and beyond.

The role

The start of 2021 saw the trustees launch a new identity for the part of the complex that has come to be known now as Stanley Halls, rebranding as Stanley Arts – a name that honours the past, whilst looking forward to a brighter future. Stanley Arts continues to forge a new identity for this part of Stanley Halls, separate from its most recent history as part of Stanley Tech, and one that clearly defines the future of this building as a South London home for community, arts, and culture for the next 120 years at least after joining the Arts Council.

When two long-standing trustees stepped down in 2024 we underwent a wave of board recruitment that saw us diversify our trustees , bringing in fresh ideas and experience., With the inauguration of a new Artistic Director & CEO at the start of this year, we are now seeking to further strengthen the skillset of our board, building resilience into our governance. We aim to recruit up to four new trustees with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Finance: overlooking management accounts, Governance and Risk Management.

  • Human Resources: overlooking hiring practices, staff surveys, work environment and staff-community/staff-board relationship.

  • Fundraising: overlooking fundraising practices (including capital fundraising), opportunities and supporting fundraising staff.

  • Our Board normally meets formally in the evening quarterly (four times a year) usually in February, May, August and November, while working groups meet in between those general meetings on an ad-hoc basis responding to action points. We would ideally like trustees to contribute the equivalent of at least one day a month to the organisation, keeping in mind that this is a voluntary unpaid position.

Consistent with our vision, we would particularly welcome interest from people who will help our board have an ethnic diversity reflective of the community we serve and the artists whose work we present, as well as people from the LGBTQ+ community.
