We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated people to join our small friendly Board of Trustees. We provide long-term support for people with communication problems (aphasia) following stroke. We welcome applicants from any background and experience.

Who we are

TALK provides long-term support and social communication opportunities for people with aphasia, an acquired language and communication disorder, most commonly following stroke, that affects speaking, understanding, reading and writing. Aphasia has a profound impact on all aspects of people’s lives. We are a small local charity, with three part-time employees, a network of volunteers and a dedicated Board of Trustees. We run five weekly groups in North-West Surrey serving about 70 members.


The role

As a Trustee of TALK Surrey CIO, you would be responsible, along with the other Trustees, for ensuring that the Charity meets its aims and objectives, manages its finances effectively and supports its beneficiaries, staff and volunteers appropriately.

Our Board currently consists of 7 Trustees, each of whom has a role depending on their experience and interests. To complement our existing skillset, we would particularly welcome people with a background in Health or Social Care, Fundraising, HR, Business or Law. We would also welcome applicants with personal or professional experience of stroke and aphasia and people from under-represented groups. But whatever experience or skills you have, please do apply!

Our Board meets every two months, usually online, but at least twice a year in person. Meetings take up to 2.5 hours, and comprise a “Management Meeting” which includes our 3 paid staff, followed by a “Reserved Meeting” for Trustees only. Face-to-face meetings usually take place in Guildford or Woking.

You might also represent the Charity at fundraising or awareness raising events, such as talks to local groups, bucket collections, sponsored events, though this is not a requirement of the role.

The role is voluntary, but we will cover any out-of-pocket expenses.
