Who we are

LEF, the Legal Education Foundation, is seeking up to three new Trustees to contribute to our mission to strengthen the power of communities to use and shape the law for social justice.

The role

?About LEF

“Why does it matter that people can understand and use the law?”

This question lies at our core. Out of asking that question, the role of the law as a tool for social justice has become the common thread of our work. We are now one of the largest social justice funders in the UK, and one of the only to focus on the specific role and potential of the law.

We have come a long way in the past 12 years, and we’ve achieved a lot – but most importantly for the new trustees, there is a lot more excitement to come. We are in the process of developing a new strategy that will accelerate our direction of travel in what and how we fund and there will be really interesting challenges and questions to work on, along with other trustees, the staff team and the Advisory Group.

There’s more information in the pack but to give a flavour, being a trustee includes: shaping and approving our vision and strategy, being part of the team that ensures we follow governance best practice, overseeing the funds and budget of the organisation, risk management, putting the charity first and avoiding conflicts of interest, upholding our values and supporting the executive team.

We are seeking up to three new trustees to contribute to our mission. In this recruitment round, we are prioritising candidates with experience in the following areas: , lived experience of social justice issues, the UK immigration system, strategic communications and influencing and progressive grantmaking. The new Trustees will also need to demonstrate an ability to work collegiately a commitment to equity, diversity and anti-oppression, and an acceptance of the legal duties of a Trustee. This a taster and for more explanation please see the candidate pack.
