Who we are

Children of Rwanda is a locally-owned and -led nonprofit committed to breaking the cycle of poverty in Western Rwanda through education. We work to create long-lasting and sustainable access to education for children. To do this, we build the financial resilience of families so they can independently provide for their children without relying on support from organisations like us.

The role

What will you be doing?

In your role as trustee, you will play a key role in moving Children of Rwanda towards a more localised form of international development. In particular, we are trying to build fundraising capacity within our team in Rwanda so that they can raise funds to support the projects independently of volunteers in the UK.

Why is this important? We firmly believe that the decision-making power within an NGO should be held by the community in which the projects are being delivered. We have taken big steps to make our team in Rwanda an independent and self-reliant entity that does not rely on volunteers from the UK. However, for this to be truly meaningful, the Rwandan staff need to be able to independently raise money for the projects they deliver, and so building in-country fundraising capacity is crucial.

What would you be doing? We have just recruited a brilliant staff member to drive fundraising in Rwanda, but they need some fundraising training and guidance as they develop our new fundraising strategy. That’s why we are looking for someone with experience in grant or corporate fundraising (or other forms of fundraising that can be done from Rwanda) who would be willing to take up this opportunity! You would help train and then co-line-manage the Fundraising Officer, and help develop and oversee the fundraising strategy.

As the Fundraising Trustee for Children of Rwanda UK, you would also be part of the Fundraising and Marketing Subcommittee, working closely with other trustees and management.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a motivated and experienced fundraiser who can help train and remotely co-manage a new Fundraising Officer in Rwanda.

You should have experience in grant and corporate fundraising, and be willing to train our new staff member in these areas. We’re especially excited to hear from you if you have experience developing fundraising strategies.

As a trustee of Children of Rwanda UK, we will also ask you take an active role on the Board, providing leadership and direction across the charity’s activities, and to comply with the expectations and laws set by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

What difference will you make?

As a trustee with fundraising experience, you will help empower our new staff member to achieve their full potential. Your insights will be critical to designing our new fundraising strategy.

And by helping us achieve this important milestone in our localisation strategy, you will contribute to a hugely important shift towards a healthier form of international development.

Before you apply

If you think this opportunity is for you, please send us a message and we’ll be in touch as soon as possible. To speed things up, we’d love you to include your relevant experience (e.g. your CV or LinkedIn) and why you are interested in the role.

We will be interviewing candidates on a rolling basis. If the vacancy is still up on Reach, then we are still interested in hearing from you!
