The Friends of Moorfields is a registered charity supporting the patients and staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital, a world centre of excellence for the specialist treatment of eye diseases. The Friends is a thriving and active member led organisation, providing a range of services to support the work of the hospital – including managing a team of over 200 volunteers and the Health Information Hub.


The role

Because
our charity supports people living with sight loss, and we are underrepresented
in this area we would welcome applications from people living with a visual
impairment.

The
Friends of Moorfields is looking for exceptional and committed individuals to
join their Board of Trustees. The Board has overall responsibility for the
Charity’s work – focusing on strategy, agreeing plans and budgets, and
supporting the Chief Executive Officer and staff to make sure the organisation
is effectively and properly run.

We
are very proud of the work we do and to enable us to build on this we are
looking for people committed to improving patient experience and to making a
difference to Moorfields Eye Hospital with skills in one or more of the
following areas: marketing, HR, management
accounting, monitoring &evaluation and fundraising.

The
Role of Trustee

You
will be able to –

·
contribute actively to the Board and regularly
attend meetings

·
ensure the mission and purpose of the Charity is
maintained

·
determine the overall direction and development of
the Charity through strategic planning and good governance

·
act as an enthusiastic ambassador for the Charity

·
ensure the Charity and its representatives operate
within all the legal and regulatory requirements and in line with the Charity’s
governing document

·
support and build the Charity’s network

·
support the Charity’s fundraising strategy by
assisting in the cultivation and stewardship of potential and existing donors

·
be involved in setting the direction of the
organisation and monitoring its performance

·
use your specific knowledge or experience to help
the Board reach sound decisions

·
work effectively as a member of the Board of
Trustees

The
Person

We
are interested to hear from a wide group of people whether you are an
experienced Trustee or wanting to take your first step at Board Level. We are
particularly interested in people with a background in the disciplines
specified above, but with experiences also in as many of the following areas –

·
leadership

·
business development: experience of developing new
propositions and services, and/or forging useful alliances with complementary
organisations

·
critical thinking

·
the ability to lead and challenge constructively

·
the ability to apply knowledge from other fields to
suggest options and solutions which are relevant in our context

·
business acumen

·
strategic planning

·
energy and commitment to the aims of the Charity

We
are also looking to address under-representation on the Board with expertise in
the following areas –

·
Investment management

·
Business Development

·
Marketing/commusnication

·
Monitoring and Evaluation

Additional
information

Trustees
and observers to the Board are voluntary roles and unpaid. We will pay
reasonable travel expenses upon presentation of a valid receipt.

The
Board meets six times a year for with meetings lasting approx. 3hrs, one full
day strategy day and some ad hoc time for sub-committees. The AGM is normally
held in November.

We
will provide a full induction upon appointment where you will meet Trustees and
staff and have the chance to meet other stakeholders to find out how the
Charity works.
