The Organisation
Keep Britain Tidy is a leading independent environmental charity that works to inspire, educate and enable people to value and protect the environment on their doorstep, so everyone can love where they live.
Through national campaigns, programmes, research and innovation, Keep Britain Tidy encourages and supports communities to reduce resource use, waste and litter, live more sustainably and improve the quality of public spaces. Its work includes Eco-Schools, the Green Flag Award for parks and green spaces, the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, the Great British Spring Clean and Buy Nothing New Month, alongside volunteering programmes such as Litter Heroes, RiverCare and BeachCare.
Established as a charity in 1960, Keep Britain Tidy is committed to using its longstanding, recognised and respected position to advocate for change and tackle the major environmental issues facing communities and the wider world. Its strategy, developed by the Board in 2024, reinforces its commitment to reducing resource use, waste and litter, helping people live sustainably and improving the quality of public space.
The Role
Keep Britain Tidy currently has eight trustees and is looking to appoint three additional trustees to strengthen the Board and help drive its ambitious agenda.
The Board is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, ensuring that it operates effectively, responsibly and in accordance with its charitable objectives and legal and regulatory requirements.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a high-profile environmental charity at an important point in its development. Trustees will contribute to strategic decision-making, provide constructive challenge and support to the senior leadership team, and help ensure that the charity continues to deliver against its mission.
The Board is keen to bring in people with different perspectives, experiences and expertise. In particular, it would welcome candidates with experience in digital, finance or Government policy, although previous trustee experience is not essential.
The Person
Above all, Keep Britain Tidy is looking for people who are motivated by its environmental mission and want to make a difference. You will have a genuine commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment, an interest in national environmental issues and an appreciation of the wider challenges facing our natural world.
You will bring:
Curiosity and good judgement – the ability to assimilate information, focus on what matters and contribute thoughtful, clear views to strategic discussions.
Collaboration and constructive challenge – the ability to work positively with fellow trustees and the senior executive team, listen to different perspectives and contribute to collective decision-making.
Passion for the environment – a genuine commitment to your local environment and an interest in the wider environmental challenges facing communities.
Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion – valuing different experiences and perspectives and helping to create an inclusive Board where everyone can contribute and be heard.
Relevant expertise or experience – particularly in digital, finance or Government policy, although Keep Britain Tidy is open-minded about the career paths and backgrounds of potential trustees.
You do not need to have previous experience as a trustee. What matters is the ability to engage, ask insightful questions, offer constructive challenge and make a thoughtful contribution, while keeping the interests of the charity and its environmental mission at the heart of your decision-making.
Keep Britain Tidy is committed to developing a Board that more accurately reflects the communities it serves and welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences.
