Who we are
The Line is East London’s public art trail that connects Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The O2, following the waterways and line of the Greenwich Meridian. Our mission is to connect communities and inspire individuals through a dynamic outdoor exhibition programme where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free. We focus on collaborative engagement projects that support wellbeing and learning and providing opportunities for young people to develop skills and improve employability.
The role
The Line is entering an exciting new chapter. Having celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025, its focus is now on building greater organisational capacity and financial resilience to ensure The Line can thrive for decades to come. This is a pivotal moment for the organisation and an inspiring time to join us.
We are seeking a Chair who shares our ambition and believes in the transformative role of art. The successful candidate will bring strategic perspective, strong networks and a passion for delivering social impact, working closely with the Board, senior management team and Director to guide The Line through its next phase of development.
The role presents a unique opportunity to help shape the future of a distinctive and ambitious arts charity, strengthening our foundations while supporting our sustainability, influence and reach.
The role
The Chair, together with the Board of Trustees, is responsible for ensuring that The Line delivers its mission and charitable objectives, operates in line with its values, and remains financially sustainable and well governed. The Chair leads the Board and ensures constructive and effective relationships between Trustees and Senior Management, enabling strong governance, strategic oversight and organisational performance.
We are seeking someone with:
Experience
- Senior leadership or non-executive/trustee experience
- Strong strategic and governance skills
- Ability to support fundraising and partnerships
Qualities
- Passion for arts, culture, and public engagement
- Collaborative and thoughtful leadership style
- Strong communication and influencing skills
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Previous Chair experience is welcome but not essential
We encourage applications from individuals with connections to East London and those currently underrepresented in the cultural sector.
Time commitment
- Three-year term with the option to renew
- Approximately 1–2 days per month
- Lead four Board meetings per year, usually in person at The Leadenhall Building, with hybrid options when needed
- Regular contact with the Director (typically remotely)
This is a voluntary role. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
